My Writing

My fiction, poetry, and journalism have appeared in various publications across Canada including The Hamilton Spectator, Matrix Magazine, Word Magazine, SubTerrain, Existere, Taddle Creek and various other literary journals. My first collection of short stories, Keep it Beautiful: Stories, is currently available fromTightrope Books.

 About Keep it Beautiful:
In Keep it Beautiful a young woman lives life vicariously through her collection of dime-store Westerns. A young man finds an unlikely safe harbor in a rural shopping mall with two zellers department stores. A middle-aged woman lives out an awkward love triangle in the slot machine pit of a rural casino. A young couple struggles to connect in a crumbling urban neighbourhood. And an elderly woman wreaks silent havoc in a grocery store produce department.Peopled with characters just on the fringe of the mainstream, Keep it Beautiful examines the mundane and dark sides of normalcy. Its characters find humour and beauty in unlikely places, while often playing victim, or at times accomplice, to their circumstances.

Written in a style inspired by Annie Proulx’s Wyoming Stories and Miriam Toews’ Summer of my Amazing Luck, Keep it Beautiful reveals the complex stories behind seemingly simple lives.

Stories from this collection have appeared in subTerrain and Taddle Creek, and the story "The Night Shift" won the 2008 Lush Triumphant Award for Fiction.

In addition to my fiction writing, I am also a freelance journalist specializing in food and drink writing and arts coverage. Click on the images to see samples of my work.
